Introduction
If you like working on cars, bikes, trucks or anything with an engine and want to gain some base level mechanical skills to build on, this course is for you.
Giving you an overview of engine, transmission, cooling, fuel, steering, suspension and braking systems, tools, general service and repair, it's ideal if you have an interest in the automotive trade and technology associated with it or want to pursue an apprenticeship in the field.

Apprenticeship
You can continue learning through an apprenticeship, where you study while gaining hands-on experience in the workplace. Possible areas you could specialise in include:
- Working with cars and light trucks – Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology
- Servicing trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles – Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
- Repairing motorcycles, dirt bikes and quad bikes – Certificate III in Motorcycle Mechanical Technology
- Maintaining construction and mining machinery – Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology
- Working with tractors and farm machinery – Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology
At university:
While most automotive careers begin with an apprenticeship and this course doesn’t offer a direct university pathway, it can provide a foundation to support future study at university in automotive engineering or transport technology.

Thursday afternoons (1pm - 5pm) during school terms.
One week-long school holiday block training (dates to be confirmed), Monday to Friday (8.30am - 4pm each day). - 2nd year of the program
Thursday mornings (8.45am - 12.30pm) during school terms.
One week-long school holiday block training (dates to be confirmed), Monday to Friday (8.30am - 4pm each day).
SWTAFE Colac Trade Training Centre
Wednesday afternoons (1pm - 5pm) during school terms.
One week-long school holiday block training (dates to be confirmed), Monday to Friday (8.30am - 4pm each day).
Cobden Technical School Trade Training Centre
Thursdays (9.30am - 2pm) during school terms.
One week-long school holiday block training (dates to be confirmed), Monday to Friday (8.30am - 4pm each day).
For this course, you will need to:
- wear appropriate protective clothing (including long-sleeved top and pants made from a cotton material)
- wear fully covered footwear
Course requirements
Entrance requirements & pre-requisites
- You must be enrolled in a secondary school course.
Partial completion
This course is partial completion only. Upon completion of the program, you will receive a Statement of Attainment listing the successful units completed. You may be able to use the Statement of Attainment to receive credit towards a full qualification, reducing the time and cost of further study.
Units offered
VCE contribution
Credit to ATAR score
Students undertaking this VET DSS program are eligible for credit of up to four VCE VET units on their VCE Statement of Results: two units at Unit 1-2 level and a Unit 3-4 sequence. Students may be entitled to 10% increment towards their VCE.
VCE Vocational Major
Students undertaking this VET DSS program through the VCE Vocational Major stream will need to complete a minimum of 180 nominal hours of a VET DSS program over a 2-year period.
