Introduction
If you're curious about how electrical systems work and enjoy hands-on problem solving, this program is a great way to kickstart your career in electrotechnology.
The electrotechnology VET DSS program introduces you to core skills used across a variety of industries including electrical, data and communications, mechanical engineering, and refrigeration.
You’ll gain practical experience using trade-specific tools, working with electrical wiring, and learning safe work practices. You’ll also explore emerging technologies focused on energy efficiency and sustainability, preparing you for a future in an evolving, in-demand field.

At South West TAFE
- Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Pre-vocational) - continue with a pre-apprenticeship to complete the full qualification.
- Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician - you can continue your path onto becoming a qualified electrician through an apprenticeship where you will learn on the job.

One week-long school holiday block training (term 2 break, dates to be confirmed), Monday to Friday (8am - 5pm each day). - 2nd year of the program
Thursday mornings (8.45am - 12.30pm) during school terms.
One week-long school holiday block training (term 2 break, dates to be confirmed), Monday to Friday (8am - 5pm each day).
SWTAFE Sherwood Park campus, Warrnambool
Wednesday afternoons (1pm - 5pm) during school terms.
One week-long school holiday block training at the Warrnambool campus (term 2 break, dates to be confirmed), Monday to Friday (8am - 5pm each day).
SWTAFE Portland campus
Thursday afternoons (1pm - 5pm) during school terms.
One week-long school holiday block training (term 2 break, dates to be confirmed), Monday to Friday (8am - 5pm each day).
For this course, you will need to:
- wear appropriate protective clothing (including long-sleeved top and pants made from a cotton material)
- wear fully covered footwear (steel capped boots are recommended).
Course requirements
Entrance requirements & pre-requisites
- You must be enrolled in a secondary school course.
- You must be in year 11 to commence the two-year program.
Partial completion
This course is partial completion only. Upon completion of the program, you will receive a Statement of Attainment listing the successful units completed. You may be able to use the Statement of Attainment to receive credit towards a full qualification, reducing the time and cost of further study.
Units offered
VCE contribution
Credit to ATAR score
Students undertaking this VET DSS program are eligible for credit of up to four VCE VET units on their VCE Statement of Results: two units at Unit 1-2 level and a Unit 3-4 sequence. Students may be entitled to 10% increment towards their VCE.
VCE Vocational Major
Students undertaking this VET DSS program through the VCE Vocational Major stream will need to complete a minimum of 180 nominal hours of a VET DSS program over a 2-year period.
Partial completion
This course is partial completion only. Upon completion of the program, you will receive a Statement of Attainment listing the successful units completed. You may be able to use the Statement of Attainment to receive credit towards a full qualification, reducing the time and cost of further study.
